The Hon Heidi Victoria MP
Minister for Women’s Issues

The Victorian Government has committed $2.4 million to improve women’s economic participation and promote women’s leadership in business, government and the community.

The Women’s Economic Participation Action Agenda 2013-15 has a range of initiatives aimed at encouraging increased participation of women in the workforce. The Agenda I launched in September will create new opportunities for women to strengthen their social enterprise and small business skills, access leadership positions and consider non-traditional career pathways.

Small Business Initiative

The Small Business Initiative will provide training and guidance to increase the number of: women as small business owners; women-led small businesses; and small business development or expansion that addresses the barriers faced by women in business.

The Small Business Initiative will be delivered by the Small Business Mentoring Service in metropolitan and regional locations over a two year period. The program will provide pathways for women in business, supporting them through leadership skills and management training and business mentorship. The initiative will be delivered through three programs, Women in Business Workshop Series, Direct One to One Mentoring, and Small Business Themed Workshops and Networking Events. For further information, contact the Small Business Mentoring Service at www.sbms.org.au

Social Enterprise initiatives

The Social Enterprise initiatives will support women entrepreneurs through training and mentoring to develop their business concepts, management and leadership skills. Social Enterprise participants will also be provided with seed funding to establish and develop their social enterprise. This might be a new social enterprise and / or the expansion of an existing social enterprise. For more information see http://www.socialtraders.com.au/thecrunch

Women in Leadership Initiative

The Women in Leadership Initiative provides specialist corporate governance training, in partnership with the Australian Institute of Company Directors, to support women into leadership positions.

The Victorian Women’s Governance Scholarships provide 34 women who are currently serving on (Victorian) government funded not-for-profit organisations the opportunity to undertake the Australian Institute of Company Directors highly regarded Company Directors Course. In addition to undertaking the course the scholarship includes one year’s membership to the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Women from rural and regional areas, Indigenous women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for the Victorian Women’s Governance Scholarship to support their board career development and strengthen the governance of Victorian not-for-profit organisations. Applications for the scholarships will open on 21 October 2013.
